August 9, 2020 | 6:00 PM
Join the Walker Book Group on Sunday, August 9 at 6:00 pm. This will be our fifth meeting using Zoom and will replace our usual potluck supper and discussion in Channing. Our Zoom meetings have resulted in lively discussions; we hope others will join us in August. Newcomers are always welcome.
We will discuss Gods of the Upper Air by Charles King. This nonfiction portrait of Frank Boas and his circle of scientists explores the history of cultural anthropology. Collectively, this circle changed the way we understand other cultures and our own. According to the New York Times reviewer, Jennifer Szalai, they chipped away “at the idea of us and them.” At a time when we understand that there is much more chipping to be done, this is an important work.
Because members are sheltering at home, we will continue meeting through the summer via Zoom on the second Sunday of each month at 6:00 pm. We have selected novels to read and discuss in the coming months. In September, we will discuss Warlight by Michael Ondaatje, and, in October, The Dutch House: A Novel by Ann Patchett.
