Walker Book Group

November 8, 2020 | 6:30 PM

Join the Walker Book Group on Sunday, November 8 at 6:30 pm. As long as the church building is closed, we will meet using Zoom instead of holding our usual potluck supper and discussion in Channing. Our Zoom meetings have resulted in lively discussions. Newcomers are always welcome.

We will discuss Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks, the author of the Pulitzer-prize winner, March. This historical novel by is set in a 17th century English village, beset by the Plague. The heroine Anna is a servant of the local pastor, who convinces villagers to quarantine to stop the spread of the plague.  The New Yorker review concluded that “The novel glitters with careful research into such arcana as seventeenth-century lead-mining, sheep-farming, and, of course, medicine, but its true strength is a deep imaginative engagement with how people are changed by catastrophe.”

In December, Caste: The Origin of our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson. This book by the acclaimed author of The Warmth of Other Suns is relevant to the congregation’s ongoing discussions of racial justice.
