Join the Walker Book Group on Sunday, February 14 at 6:30 pm. As long as the church building is closed, we will meet using Zoom instead of holding our usual potluck supper and discussion in Channing. Our Zoom meetings have resulted in lively discussions. Newcomers are always welcome. In February, we will discuss Caste: The Origin of our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson. You may remember Wilkerson as the author of the Pulitzer-prize winner, The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration. In Caste, she draws an analogy between the caste systems in India and Nazi Germany with racism in America. In each instance, groups of people are dehumanized to justify both keeping them in the bottom ranks of society and the enforcement mechanisms to do so. The New York Times reviewer writes that Caste is one of the most powerful nonfiction books he has encountered. In March, we will discuss The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett and, in April, The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes. For future updates and directions for signing into the Zoom meeting, subscribe to the Walker Book Group egroup list.
