How and when will the book group meet in the future? Before the pandemic, the book group met in Channing Hall on the second Sunday of each month at 5:30 for a potluck supper and book discussion. The coronavirus forced us to resort to monthly Zoom meetings. Now, as individuals we must decide how we wish to negotiate a future where the virus presents a continuing and changing, albeit small, risk. The book group must make the same decision. Should we continue to meet on Zoom or can we meet in person and enjoy a potluck together? Should the meeting be multi-platform? If we meet in person, is our traditional Sunday evening time the best for all participants? We will discuss these questions and agree on a plan, perhaps temporary, for future meetings at the beginning of our September meeting. Please add your voice to this discussion. We welcome newcomers.
For discussion in September, we have selected The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles. The action in this novel takes place in 1954 and concerns a group of teenagers, former residents of a juvenile reformatory, and the eight-year-old brother of one who take a car trip on the Lincoln Highway. The older brother wants to head to San Francisco to find the mother who abandoned their family when he was eight. The others prefer a trip to New York City with many detours along the way. The NPR reviewer writes: “There’s so much to enjoy in this generous novel packed with fantastic characters — male and female, black and white, rich and poor — and filled with digressions, magic tricks, sorry sagas, retributions, and the messy business of balancing accounts.”
