Forging an Anti-racist Identity: Staying the Course
TOLERANCE FOR RACIAL DISCOMFORT
“White Fragility is a state in which even a minimum amount of racial stress becomes intolerable, triggering a range of defensive moves. These moves include the outward display of emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and behaviors such as argumentation, silence, and leaving the stress-inducing situation. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium. Racial stress results from an interruption to what is racially familiar.” –Robin DiAngelo
COMFORT AND SAFE SPACES
“By creating bubbles within white supremacy where it’s “safe” to practice anti-racism, we’re implying there are places where racism can remain unchallenged.” –DiDi Delgado
DESPAIR AND FATIGUE
“White people can take a break from the frustration and despair of anti?racism work. Such retreat will result in no significant consequences for us. Racism doesn’t allow such a respite for people of color. One of the elemental privileges of being white is our freedom to retreat from the issue of racism. And our work against racism doesn’t get done.” –Joan Olsson
