Juneteenth

Juneteenth has been hailed as America’s second independence day. It’s the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, and it was officially proclaimed a national holiday in 2021. Michael Hornsby, the service leader, will explore the reasons why it is important that we celebrate Juneteenth, and Hilary Torres will speak about why it’s celebrated by her family. Jaye Holly, Pascelle St. Laurent, and Luis Torres will also share their impressions of the ongoing struggle for rights and dignity, and the nature of Black freedom, among other things.

And finally, we will have wonderful songs performed by Ireta London and Olga Martinez! Coffee Hour hosts are the Albany UU Inclusivity Team. Please join us for what will be an entertaining, informative, and thought provoking all-American celebration, with a special acknowledgement of all of the fathers in the congregation!

After the service on June 23, at 11:30, as part of the Juneteenth Celebration, the Albany UU BIPOC Racial Healing Group will screen “The American Society of Magical Negroes,” a film released in 2024 that had a very brief theatrical run, and which is now streaming in relative anonymity on Peacock . Immediately following this comedy, we will have a facilitated, lighthearted discussion regarding the film’s depiction of race relations. Popcorn and soft drinks will be provided. Feel to bring snacks to share with the congregation. Please RSVP
