Meditation and Buddhist-inspired self-help techniques have grown in popularity — but at what cost? In this talk, Aaron Proffitt discusses how modern approaches to Buddhism neglect one of the most powerful dimensions of Buddhism: Other Power. Rather than focusing on individual solutions to systemic problems, multi-generational Buddhist communities emphasize the vital role of community, education, care for others, and the interconnectedness of all life. From this perspective, we naturally come to realize that awakening is not something accomplished by the self alone, rather it is achieved through the working of limitless life and light, the boundless compassion and wisdom within us and all around us. This Other Power approach is commonly known as Amida Buddha.
